Question 26 of 65Verbal Abilityreading comprehension

Read the passage below and answer the question.

In many small Indian towns, the public reading room opens before most shops do. By seven in the morning, a few retired men are already at its long table, passing the day's newspapers from hand to hand. Homemakers come later to borrow novels in their own language, and children arrive in the evening for the picture books. Many such rooms charge a small monthly fee and run on that money and on books that families give away.

For years, people have predicted the end of these rooms. Television, and then the mobile phone, brought the news into every home, and it is true that fewer young people now come in just to read a newspaper. Yet many reading rooms are still open, and the reason has less to do with books than with the room itself.

A reading room is one of the few public places in a small town where nobody is expected to buy anything. A tea stall expects you to order tea; a shop expects you to shop. In the reading room, an old man who lives alone can spend a whole morning in company, and a farmer waiting for the evening bus can sit with a magazine. The librarian, often a volunteer, knows most visitors by name and notices when one of them stops coming.

The rooms that have lasted are the ones that changed along with their readers. Some now hold story hours for children in the holidays; others let members take books home, or keep a shared computer for filling in online forms. What such rooms need most is what they have always needed: a few people in the town who are willing to keep the door open.
